Racing
Prima
This is an "entry level" racing frame. This model
is built with Reynolds 631 oversize tube. Reynolds 631 is 853 without the heat treatment
and produces a very lively frame without any harshness in the ride quality. The frame
incorporates forged dropouts and high quality fittings including a cast seat lug. The
forks are 531 with a cast crown or we can fit carbon fibre forks in either Ahead or
conventional configuration. Braze on lever bosses, chainstay stop, 2 sets of bottle bosses

These designs are the standard used on
the basic frames. They are based on experience of the last 26 years of frame building and
will fit "most of the people most of the time" If you have a requirement for
something different then this can be accommodated by altering top tube or seat tube length
or seat angle at no extra cost.
If you are not sure then please ask, Dave will try and
accommodate any request.

Classique
The Classique is a traditional racing style frame.
Built to the highest standards of craftsmanship, with the classic horizontal top tube and
lugged construction. This frame is built with Reynolds 631 oversize tube. Reynolds 631 is
853 without the heat treatment and produces a very lively frame without any harshness in
the ride quality. The rear stays are Reynolds 725, a heat treated tube similar to the old
753. The Classique is also available in lugless fillet brazed construction (as pictured
below) for those who prefer the smooth look.

The Classique range of frames are all custom built so each
frame is the product of an extensive design consultation with the customer allowing the
frame to be tailored to the exact requirements of both riding style and type.
All the Reynolds tubes are supplied in a range of diameters
and gauges thus allowing Dave to choose an appropriate tube for each area of the frame.
Whilst the first preferred tube for the Classique is 631 with oversize top and down tubes
Dave can build this frame from any of the Reynolds, Columbus or Dedaccai tube set you may
require.
Sticking with Reynolds, the 725 heat treated tubes can
usefully be used in the main triangle of a larger frame to increase torsional stiffness
without adding weight or cost
Classique 853
Introduced into the Reynolds range
late in 1995, 853 actually gets stronger after joining. It is available in a wide range of
diameters and gauges which enables Dave to "fine tune" the frame design to the
precise requirements of the rider. Based on the same component spec. and design
consultation process as the Classique, the Clasiquel 853 is the ultimate in conventional
lugged frames.

Usually built in "Micro"
style i.e. a lower top tube and steeper seat angle, with the seat stays attaching level
with the top tube. Used with an extended seat pin to get the saddle at the correct height,
this allows the Tri bars to be set low enough to get some adjustment for different types.
Each frame is built to order so any specific requirements can be accommodated. These
frames would normally be built fillet brazed with vertical rear dropouts and a cast vee
brake bridge.
The tubeset can be anything from Reynolds 631 through all
the Reynolds range with all its possible variations to 853 including a teardrop shaped
down tube that has been re worked into a more aerodynamic shape. Any of the Columbus
tubesets can be used including the visually stunning EGO with its deep aerofoil section

The Elite features a deep section down
tube, either oval or teardrop. Alternatively Dave can make it with opposed oval top and
down tubes. This frame can also be built with Pro Team 853 main triangle tubes which are
even lighter than the already light standard 853. This will enable Dave to produce a steel
frame with all of the advantages of steel that weighs only 3.5 lbs approx (slightly
lighter again with a carbon back end) for a 57cm frame. This weight is almost equal to
many of the Aluminium and Titanium frames around today, but at a considerable cost saving.
Dave has built a compact version of this model into a bike
weighing under 18 lbs using Carbon AheadSet forks, Columbus carbon seat stays, Dura Ace
groupset and carefully selected components. If you throw more money at it, it is possible
to get it even lighter (both your bike and your wallet!)

FAQs about ordering a frame
Audax
Audax is a branch of cycling that continues to grow, attracting riders both young and old
(and many in between!) from a wide range of backgrounds. Audax events vary from 100km
"Brevet Populaires" to marathons like Paris Brest Paris at 1200km. Audax events
follow a route with control points that must be passed through within a minimum and
maximum time limit. The bikes used for this type of event are many and varied but the
commonest is in the form of a cross between a racing and touring bike often referred to as
a "fast tourer" with the geometry adjusted to give a very slightly more relaxed
ride than a pure racing frame. Many riders use a rear pannier rack to carry all they will
need during the event as the spirit of Audax is to ride unaided. Audax bikes are seen as
ideal bikes for all year round riding with their fittings for mudguards
Audax Populaire
This is our entry level Audax frame. Becoming
extremely popular with the rider who wants an all year round bike, this frame has more
"life" than the traditional tourer but not the "riding on a razor
blade" feel of a pure race frame. The Audax Populaire is as at home in events like
Paris Brest Paris as it is commuting to work every day. This model is built with Reynolds
631 tube with oversized top tube and cast seat lug. This increases the torsional rigidity
of the frame which improves the handling when a load is being carried, ie it stops it
twisting about. The standard designs for this frame are based on Dave's experience of the
last 26 years, but if you have a requirement for a variation of the main dimensions (seat
tube, top tube, seat angle) then as each frame is built individually this can be
accommodated at no extra cost.

Super Randonneur
The Super Randonneur is the audax
equivalent of the Classique. This frame is based on Daves own audax bike he used in
the 1999 Paris Brest Paris, 2000 End to End and 2001 London Edinburgh London.
Utilising the finest cast components, this frame is designed
for comfort over long distances. The tube set is carefully selected at the design
consultation stage and will be based around a 631 main triangle, a 525 rear triangle and
531 forks. However the riders size and riding style have a large part to play in this
decision process. This frame is, like the Classique series, a total custom package with
any or all of the dimensions specifiable.

RANDONNEUR CUSTOMER FEEDBACK
"I must say I really love this bike. For
me, the bike is a perfect mix between comfort and stability on the one hand, and
liveliness and racing feeling on the other hand. It was no trouble at all
taking the bike up to rather high speed, which surprised me a little bit. And it´s
amazing comfort never made feel shabby due to discomfort on the bike. A superb
bike. I must say Dave, you really know what you are doing."

FAQs about ordering a frame
Touring
Wanderer
A standard design touring frame introduced in 2002.
The Wanderer is constructed in Reynolds 525 which is the perfect tubeset for touring bikes
having the same published properties as the venerable 531. This tube is strong and
resilient without the rigidity associated with the more racing oriented tubesets. All of
Dave's 26 years of framebuilding experience (more than 11,000 frames) is condensed into
this frame for the tourist who prefers 700c wheels. The frame is of fillet brazed
construction with a sloping top tube. This decreases the standover height which is useful
when heavily laden on rough roads or tracks. The adoption of an Ahead style steerer
increases the range of handlebar positions possible because of the wide range of stem
angles and lengths available. This also allows straight bars to be used if required.
The design allows frame sizes to be rationalised to 18"
(S), 20"(M), 22"(L), 24"(XL) Each one of which is equivalent to a
conventional frame 2" bigger but allows more leeway in fitting. A custom option is
also available. The use of 1 1/4" down tube and 1 1/8" top tube increases the
torsional stiffness of the frame which reduces twisting under load. The compact design
allows a longer seat pin which provides some vertical flex which is important for comfort.
The frame has a full complement of braze on fittings
including 3 sets of bottle bosses (for trips across the Sahara!), front and rear four
point pannier frame fixing, cantilever brake pivots and cable hanger with adjuster, and
all the usual brake and gear wire stops etc.

Wayfarer - WINNER OF THE TOURING BIKE OF THE YEAR AWARD
A 26" wheel version of the Wanderer. Many riders prefer
the extra comfort of the larger section tyres that this sort of wheel allows. They are
also stronger, being a smaller diameter with consequently shorter spokes and are therefore
seen to be better suited to carrying heavy loads. Another big advantage is that tyres for
this size wheel are generally available worldwide.
The Wayfarer is built from the same tubeset in the same
style and sizes as the Wanderer with custom options available. A wider fork crown is
specified to allow the use of up to 2.1" tyres which also allows the use of a 1
1/8" steering column . At the rear, the chain and seatstays are cranked to allow
similar tyres to be fitted. The frames are designed for use with dropped bars and
cantilever brakes with the brake pivot position optimised for vee brake use should you
want to use straight bars and ATB levers

WAYFARER
CUSTOMER FEEDBACK
I'm just back from a months hard riding in Armenia. Tougher than the Pyrenees or the
Alps. Over 82,000 ft of climbing. Anyway, I was riding my faithful Wayfarer which
you built 4 years or so ago. What a comfortable ride. Feels like it has
suspension. The roads were the worst I've ever encountered. Everyone admires the
bike and I keep recommending where they should go if they want one.
Bruce Logan
"I bought a Wayfarer from you back in November and we've just returned from a tough
tour of Morocco. The bike performed brilliantly.
It had done a tour of Scotland and the Lake District but
this was it's first overseas venture. The handling loaded and unloaded was superb and it
tackled the off-road stuff without a problem including a trip down some rocky 'stone
steps' - not bad for a bike with drop handlebars. It was so good I'm trying to
persuade my wife to buy one."

Hosteller 700
The Hosteller in its various guises is
a full blooded touring frame of conventional lugged construction. A complete custom
package that can be designed to suit any style of touring from Sunday afternoon jaunts to
"round the world" expedition stuff. Reynolds 525 is the basis for this top class
touring frame. The range of diameters and gauges available allows Dave to select the
appropriate tube for each area of the frame to ensure precise fitness for purpose.
Typically this will include oversize top and down tubes, heavy gauge seat stays, bent
chainstays and a wide cast fork crown to accommodate wide tyres This model is for use with
700c wheels and any tyre section may be accommodated up to 47mm. As with all the full
custom frames the design is the result of a comprehensive consultation with the customer.
Each frame will typically have cast fork crown, bottom bracket and lugs. A complete set of
braze on fittings including brake pivots, front and rear pannier points and a pump peg
Hosteller
26
The cycling world has a lot to thank the
Mountain Bike for, the 26" wheel is a prime example. A touring frame designed to use
these wheels has several advantages. The wheels are smaller diameter and therefore
stronger, The tyres are available in a wide variety of sections from 25 mm right up to
2.5" and in many different tread patterns. Probably most important for the expedition
tourer is the worldwide availability of the tyres and rims. With this in mind Dave
re-designed the Hosteller to take ATB wheels. This has proved extremely popular, the added
comfort of the wide tyres being a big attraction. The material spec of the Hosteller 26 is
the same as the 700 with high quality cast components and all the necessary braze on
fittings that a touring bike requires. Both of these models can also be built using
"Fillet Brazing" so that the design is not constrained by the lugs. For example
very small frames can be built with sloping top tubes to give the rider adequate stand
over height on rough terrain. Odd angles can be accommodated for riders with specific
physical needs.
The Hosteller 26 was reviewed in the February 1999
edition of Cycling Plus. Click

CUSTOMER FEEDBACK
"We are absolutely delighted with our new
expedition bikes. Previous bikes we have owned have been unstable when heavily loaded,
putting extra strain on arm muscles, steering against the load. The bikes you have built
for us feel exactly the same loaded or unloaded - and the steering is
completely relaxed.
Since we go to remote places we have always had the
burden of a heavy tool kit - and another bonus is your construction - entirely with a
small number of Allen keys. The tool kit is now 1/4 of the previous weight and so far has
not been used.
We had expected hand built bikes to be an
improvement, but these have really exceeded our expectations."

FAQs about ordering a frame
ATBs
Since building his first "Mountain Bike" in 1983
(when most people had no idea what a mountain bike was) Dave has been involved with the
development of the A.T.B in the United Kingdom for 20 years. Sponsorship of, and
involvement with, various top riders like Deb Murrell (who rode one of Dave's bikes at the
Los Angeles olympics) over the years has produced much feedback from the "sharp
end" of the racing world. Dave has also worked closely with A.T.B. journalist and
author Carlton Reid, producing bikes for his many trips around Africa and various
inhospitable parts of the world. Dave produced one of, if not the first, raised chainstay
frames in this country - The Vulcan, which the "wrecking crew" from MBUK
Magazine described as a bike "to boldly go where no bike has gone before". The
Diabolo model introduced in 1988 was an instant hit among the discerning.
In 1990 Dave was voted "best UK Custom Mountain Bike
Frame Builder" by the readers of MBUK.
The result of all this experience is to be seen in our range
of A.T.B. frames. The Dave Yates custom models cover any variation possible or required in
a hard tail A.T.B. frame. From racing in top class events to touring the far reaches of
the Hindu Kush Dave can produce a frame to suit your purpose. If he hasn't already done it
he is prepared to listen to your ideas and translate your dream into reality.
With the introduction of full suspension and cheap aluminium
frames the demand for custom frames fell right off, but recently there has been a distinct
revival of interest in the qualities of a well built custom steel frame.
Diabolo
Single Speed
Update of the classic Diabolo model
that many riders of 'a certain age' will remember. The cult of single speed riding (which
seems to concentrate more on beer than bikes) has grown in popularity over the last few
years with events being held on both sides of the Atlantic. In its single speed form the
Diabolo is the classic fillet brazed standard sized frame that it was in its earlier
incarnation. Comes in 16" 18" and 20". Now built in Reynolds 631 tube.
There are no bells or whistles, just a well proven all purpose design that has stood the
test of time. Dave can also build this frame as made to measure, adjusting any or all of
the dimensions to suit. An option only available on single speed frames is a bottle opener
on the seat stays!!!
Custom ATB
First presented in 1993 is the ultimate
custom machine, the D.O.N.K.I.S.N.O.B (Dave's Oversize No Kompromise Interactive System.
Never Obviously Beaten!!!) This must be said with the tongue very firmly in the cheek! The
basic design of this frame is the peak of a developmental sequence of prototype frames
running back to 1983. It combines a long top tube, 23½ on an 18 inch frame, with a short
rear end, 15¾ using 2. 1 tyres, and geometry revised to make the best use of front
suspension. However this is a custom frame so you tell Dave what you want! Reynolds 853 is
Daves current favourite and by selecting the correct tubes a sub 4lb frame can be
built which compares very favourably with aluminium. It also has the added advantage over
aluminium of repairability. The trick to good ATB frame design is getting the balance of
the rider positioned correctly between the wheels. Many modern frame designs have gone too
short in the top tube. This tends to push the rider more upright and further back thus
lightening the front of the bike. A slightly longer top tube and slightly steeper seat
angle compensate for this and keep the riders weight balanced between the wheels. Dave
would normally fillet braze these frames but if you want it TIG welded he can accommodate
this request. Disc mount on the rear or vee brake pivots are standard.

CUSTOMER FEEDBACK
"First things first, the frame that Dave built was
absolutely spot-on. After discussing what I wanted out of the frame he went ahead and made
it reality
a bike that would comfortably take me and a load of kit several hundred
kilometres through remote parts of the globe yet still have the geometry to allow proper,
un-laden off-road riding along the way. A third requirement was for it to look good. Taste
may be a fickle thing but I feel that in this he also succeeded."
